Meet Sensei Katie

1st Degree Black Belt
Assistant Instructor

Sensei Katie is a 1st Degree Black Belt with Villari's Studio of Self Defense in Royal Palm Beach, FL. She is also one of our assistant instructors, having completed the Villari's Instructors College, and regularly teaches classes for our pre-schoolers, teens and adults. We sat Sensei Katie down to discuss her background in Martial Arts and to ask her what benefits and tips she has for aspiring Black Belts. Here are the results of that conversation.

Sensei Katie, how long have you studied the Martial Arts?

I've been studying for approximately 7 years.

Why did you begin studying Karate?

Originally I began as a favor to my sister, Virginia. It only took one class to become hooked.

What motivates you to come to class each week?

Many things! How good I feel physically, mentally and emotionally when class is over. Seeing my abilities progress over the years and understanding that I have grown, not only as a student but also as an individual. Learning ~ there is always something to be learned and the instructors are welcoming and willing to share their knowledge. The feeling I get when a move or concept finally clicks!

Why did you decide to become an instructor?

I love working with others. I enjoy learning and the best way to learn is to teach, because in teaching you are perpetually learning.

What benefits do you personally get from studying Karate?

Not only do I have more self-confidence in new situations, but I am more open to trying new things. A better understanding of who I am. More awareness of the world around me. Karate has helped with my balance, helped me with weight loss/management, and has provided me with a great exercise regimen.

What is the best advice you can give your students?

Make each day count and always give your best.

Why should children and adults study Karate?

To learn to take care of themselves as well as to care for others.

What goals do you hope to achieve in your training?

To extend "Black Belt Excellence" beyond the dojo walls into my everyday life. To become more aware of myself and my abilities.
