Meet Sensei Carolyn
2nd Degree Black Belt Assistant Instructor
Sensei Carolyn is a 2nd Degree Black Belt with Villari's Studio of Self Defense in Royal Palm Beach, FL. She is also one of our assistant instructors, having completed the Villari's Instructors College, and teaches classes for our pre-schoolers, teens and adults. You can typically find her in the office, making sure everything's running the way it should. We sat Sensei Carolyn down to discuss her background in Martial Arts and to ask her what benefits and tips she has for aspiring Black Belts. Here are the results of that conversation.
Sensei Carolyn, how long have you studied the Martial Arts?
I have been studying Martial Arts since 1999.
Why did you begin studying Karate?
My older daughter started before me. Watching her classes, I thought I could do it as well. I didn't know what I was really getting myself into, but I am glad I did!
What motivates you to come to class each week?
I learn something new in every class, so I am interested every week on what that will be. Additionally, I just feel better after class.
Why did you decide to become an instructor?
I like to teach others, and I thought it would help me understand the Martial Arts better myself. I enjoy sharing all the benefits of the Martial Arts with other people. Going to instructor's college and becoming an instructor has given me loads of confidence and information on how to communicate with others. It's also a lot of fun to watch people progress through the ranks.
What benefits do you personally get from studying Karate?
I have better coordination, reflexes, and higher endurance. I have self-discipline and self-confidence that I did not have before. I am confident that I could defend myself and my two daughters if ever threatened, by the things that I have been studying. And generally, I'm all-around healthier from the inside out: mind, body and spirit.
What is the best advice you can give your students?
Never give up! Don't doubt yourself. Even people in wheelchairs have black belts. Never Quit. Don't be in such a hurry to get to the next level. And remember to practice!
Why should children and adults study Karate?
There are so many reasons.... There's no better way to get in shape and stay in shape. You learn how to defend yourself and protect your family.
What goals do you hope to achieve in your training?
Training more! Taking it day by day. Remembering that this is for me.
